I don't know if the LA fire department is properly funded or not but the claim that the city cut its budget last year — which is circulating widely on the right — is false. As Politico notes, the budget actually INCREASED by $50 million. A portion of the funding was approved in a separate bill.

That assertion is wrong. The city was in the process of negotiating a new contract with the fire department at the time the budget was being crafted, so additional funding for the department was set aside in a separate fund until that deal was finalized in November. In fact, the city’s fire budget increased more than $50 million year-over-year compared to the last budget cycle, according to Blumenfield’s office, although overall concerns about the department’s staffing level have persisted for a number of years.

$1,131,794,901 That's how much Big Oil has spent over the last 30 years paying off Congress to look the other way on climate action while the planet burns. Well, the planet is burning. Don't let them look away.
Imagine watching disaster movies like The Day After Tomorrow or 2012 and thinking that the apocalyptic weather scenes were the “unrealistic” part. Turns out those scenes were almost bang on. The unrealistic part was the humans working together to overcome the problem & save the world. Sigh.

What is a Supernova Remnant? A supernova remnant (SNR) is the structure left behind after a star explodes in a supernova. It consists of the ejected material from the explosion, as well as the shockwaves interacting with the surrounding interstellar medium. Over time, this material spreads out, forming expanding shells of gas and dust. Supernova remnants are key for studying star death, cosmic ray acceleration, and the enrichment of the universe with heavy elements.

Image Description via NASA: A supernova remnant appears to float in space. Its core glows in shades of yellow and gold, as filaments wisp out into cooler shades of blue. The remnant's shape is similar to a cone, spiraling upwards towards the top of the image. The background is dotted with stars in various shades of red and purple.

ABC, NBC & CBS dedicated about 16 minutes of airtime last night to the California wildfires without once mentioning climate change. Since the news failed do it's job, here's a short summary of the role of climate change and wildfire risk: www.noaa.gov/noaa-wildfir...

Every time I listen to BBC World Service radio I'm reminded how excellent it is. A comparatively balanced, nuanced, global perspective that we don't get to see much of from many other newsrooms.
Great letter in today's Guardian. What sort of free speech is prevented by factchecking, Zuck?
DEI is the bogeyman for those who believe that if I’m gaining, they must be losing. The idea that everything would be fine if only white men ran the world is a weak argument—clung to by insecure men who can’t handle reality. DEI ensures women & BIPOC are looked at fairly IN ADDITION to white men.

Sure Happy It’s Thursday! What song is stuck in your head right now?
Legit surprised how many people seem to be enjoying that Glowworm thread. Y'all will end up with one on HMS Ledbury if you're not careful.
In 1850, the California government banned the controlled burning that Indigenous people had been doing for centuries. The practice controlled the forest density, scaled down undergrowth, and promoted fire-resistant species. It reduced the severity, mileage, and overall number of forest fires. 1/5
