This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.

If everyone in the class is turning in the exact same output, there might not be much room for actual thinking. Bringing a bit of creativity or critical thinking into an assignment doesn't mean making it longer or more difficult for the kids.
