WAIT there's an even better solution! knitr::include_graphics() has an auto_pdf arg that will switch to PDF instead of PNG *automatically*. So there's no need to do any conditional output checking—you can just set auto_pdf = TRUE or use a global knitr .graphics .auto_pdf option #rstats #QuartoPub
