Today in 1962, the US conducted the semi-underground SEDAN nuclear test at the Nevada Test Site. The blast from the 104-kiloton device, buried ~635' underground, threw 12,000,000 tons of rock and dirt into the air, 8,000,000 tons of which fell outside the crater from a cloud that rose 12,000' high.
