This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.

To be more explicit, as long as this overrides OS-level user caret styles, this is a terrible idea, and really showcases what spec work looks like when a11y isn’t involved at all.
