This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.

In that context, sure.
But "I was given a book" could be taken to mean anything from a gift to a grotty boring textbook handed out on the first day of school. May have to give it back.

"I was gifted a book" ... someone gave me this book as a gesture; it is mine now etc etc
