Curioushttps://bsky.app/profile/jwfreebird.bsky.socialhttps://bsky.app/profile/jwfreebird.bsky.social/post/3mzob3wdz222lI will miss Salon.com, specifically their years of great film coverage, which were instrumental in getting me deeper into movies. With that in mind, here is a link to one of my favorites, a list of "Forty movies every film fan should see" from over 20 years ago: https://www.salon.com/2002/10/30/literacy_101/ https://Salon.com06 Nov 2026 20:50 +0000at://did:plc:4vaelo7zj7hgoneonyemm2t2/app.bsky.feed.post/3mzob3wdz222lhttps://bsky.app/profile/jwfreebird.bsky.social/post/3mwqyvzzbfc2bTHE WEIGHT and Ethan Hawke's performance are both "best of the year" contenders. Incredible suspense/action AND touching humanity. (Partway through I thought "This is like a great Western" only to find @mattzollerseitz.bsky.social name-dropping Budd Boetticher and Anthony Mann in this review.) Had me from the opening credits and never let go. I hope more people get a chance to see it! "Weird Al" was also the 1st concert I took my kids to and it was the best. Costumes. Props. All the hits. The band went acoustic for an unplugged set. And my kids learned the concept of an "encore" when he left the stage before returning to play "The Saga Begins." Perfect show. They have a 100-year-old Wurlitzer that fills the building and is played live by Blaine Gale, who just turned 93! John Sayles' next movie is a Western! Awesome! But he's already in the genre pantheon for this one. A meditation on borders, communities, race and, oh yeah, murder. Hands down one of the best movies of the 1990s.
