A pleasant riverside walk along the Tyne into Newcastle, stopping for coffee & cake at an Italian café. Carried on past some reminders of coal haulage & many bridges & then left the riverside for the final 5 miles....

Day 5 of Hadrian's Wall trail - a long section which left the remnants of the wall behind, mainly spending time walking close to the Military Road through fields, besides the Vallum (a ditch behind the wall). A shorter, mostly downhill stretch from the Old Repeater Station to Cholloford. We passed a milecastle overgrown by oak trees, long stretches of Wall still there & an old temple & a visit to Chesters. Had time for a swim by the bridge. JimBobs ear healing OK now.

We're walking along Hadrian's Wall national trail this week. That should be fun, as it is the best leg (most scenic & usually done in daylight!), but I'll have to brush up on my navigation. Good to be able to help another contender.

After I'd finished following the dots on the Summer Spine Races, I got round to putting down some thoughts on my experience of doing the Winter version on the Challenger South race earlier this year.
https://petesrunningblog.wordpress.com/2026/06/18/spine-challenger-south-january-2026/

Today's run took me from Hawes to the top of Gt Shunner Fell & back on the Pennine Way.
