The Annual MARE-Madeira Summer Retreat took us to Fajã dos Padres, last Friday. It was a day of snorkeling, tapas and monk seals! Days like these remind us of the importance of celebrating nature and team spirit. We return, our energy recharged, for another year of discoveries!

Fieldwork for the #FCT-funded #LANTERN project has already begun! In a collaboration involving designers, engineers, and biologists, researchers from MARE-Madeira, supported by specialists from AIR Centre and NTNU, are developing light traps to study #zooplankton in Madeira's coastal waters.

#DeepOmics just won a MARE-Évora Mini Grant! Led by Soraia Vieira, researcher at MARE-UÉvora, and joined by Paola Parretti at MARE-Madeira, this project will explore the biodiversity of deep-sea sediments. Stay tuned for updates!

Congratulations, Dr. Mieke Weyn! Mieke successfully defended her thesis on the movements and social behaviors of short-finned pilot whales in the North Atlantic. Her work aids science and conservation (including a potentially important corridor between Madeira and the Canaries!)

We have a new doctor! Congratulations to Eva Iñiguez for successfully defending her PhD thesis this month! Eva studied organic UV filters (e.g. from sunscreen) in the marine environment, demonstrating their presence across a wide range of species and throughout the water column.
