The first attempt at vaccination in the colonies was done by scraping people with a sharp object containing a bit of smallpox pus. An enslaved African named Onesimus in Boston told his owner, Cotton Mather, about it in 1716, a practice long performed in Africa. Onesimus later purchased his freedom.
