I am 99.9% the reason for this change by Lyft is cost savings:
Reducing payments processing fees!
(They add up for millions of trips: it’s a fixed percentage PLUS a fixed small fee - eg $0.50 for each charge. Makes sense at Lyft’s scale and with tips etc!)
