This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.

I know almost nothing about their cloud stack. My assumption is they try to keep it as a secret sauce. But streaming a live event to 10s of millions of simultaneous viewers is very different from serving standard Netflix fare to even 100s of millions of devices.
