Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act (June 17, 1930) raised import
duties supposedly to protect American farmers and businesses from international competition. Prior to its passage the US already had one of the highest tariff (or import tax) rates in the world. It doubled tariff rates on imported goods to 40%.
