Periodic reminder: modern LEDs are insanely efficient, this LED is glowing with a *1 megaohm resistor*, and is (barely) visibly lit with just 1.1uA of current.
These days, I use 10k-50k resistors, if you put the 200-500 ohm resistors from your old textbooks, you will be seeing stars.
