A second part to this, when it comes to optimization:
* If you KNOW who/what/how you are talking to a device, you should have NO extra data in those messages, that should be an EXTREMELY optimized route
* If you DON'T, there should ALWAYS be a fallback "discovery" path, which can be big/slow
