It is pretty direct. With higher temperature, the zooxanthellae symbionts produce more reactive oxygen species, and the corals expel them. However, corals need the photosynthetizing zooxanthellae, and without them, they die. https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S0304380018302485
