This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.

I agree that's a real risk with plugin ecosystems, the "embrace, extend and extinguish" pattern. But here it's different, i feel a classic case of impatience driving innovation. They've been live for quite a while, core catching up to what they've been doing. Innersource meant it benefits everyone.
