1/4" cables are used for an incredible number of incompatible things. But if you use Speakon for passive speakers and XLR for balanced line level (or only use powered speakers) you remove most of the risk. Can't get away from 1/4" entirely, but ideally the only ones on stage are short runs to DIs.
