This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.

as part of this journey, i also learned that knitr (and thus quarto, as a side effect) can automatically translate interactive graphics (e.g. leaflet maps) into static images via webshot2 (https://github.com/rstudio/webshot2), which is just awesome and i wish the jupyter engine could pull that off too
