a bunch of reasons i reckon
markdown represents a subset of html. odt, word docs, etc., are supersets. ssgs can implement the whole of markdown relatively easily, couldn't do the same with odt.
markdown came out in 2004, odt in 2005, word support for odt in 2007ish, docx was only standardized 2008
