This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.

For a while, FB also used XMPP but they didn't allow federation iirc. They then moved to MQTT, also unfederated.
And indeed, Gaim back in the xfree86 days. Desktop was so stable /s that I quickly learned console and irssi so my connections wouldn't poof on every X crash 😆
