This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.

In general, when designing for experiences that will heavily feature media content, I tend to simplify the supporting UI.
It's only one part of the process, but helps keep everything visually balanced.
