I am no fan of genai, but I don't think this is a fair summary of the research. The NYT article references Martínez (2024) at https://doi.org/10.1007/s10506-024-09396-9. That DOES reproduce OpenAI's claimed raw scores for the multiple choice MBE section. But the claimed percentile was wrong, as was the essay score.
