Pinos Altos was a gold mining town back in the late 1800s. Senator George Hearst, father of newspaper mogul William Randolph Hearst, invested in several mines around Pinos Altos in the 1880s. The wealth to build Hearst castle was extracted, in part, from the hills of the Gila. #history #NewMexico
