Pet peeve: I hate how often ppl claim “all the researchers will just move to Europe/Canada!” You vastly under-estimate how little money there is there vs the USA- and unless that changes ASAP this loss is just going to decimate global science, full stop. 🧪🔭
I did my PhD in the Netherlands/ married a Dutchman, and also am a Hungarian/Canadian citizen. We’ve never been against moving to either earlier, but each time I applied for a job maybe 10% the listings were for either. And they’re SO EXTRA COMPETITIVE bc of all the ppl who want to go home.
Toss in the fact that much of Europe also has right wing governments slashing research budgets and yeah… no one is saving us from our problems but ourselves. If there is a coveted position in either in the next few years they’ll sure have their pick.
I see your point, and this is not a solution that scales, but it happens that will have comparatively many vacant directorial positions over the next years. So for some top people in their basic research field, that should be an interesting option.

Each director position comes with substantial funding that allows them to hire. So more like 2-300. Definitely insufficient but it's a start. And should motivate the governments to increase fundings to open tenure positions.
