この語の初出の論文「Brahmin Left vs Merchant Right」ではインドのカースト制そのものについては注釈で触れるのみですが、Marchant = Kshatryas/Vaishyas で、エリート同士の対立(インテリのエリート vs ビジネスエリート)で政治が動いているって観点での比喩ですよね。教会 vs 貴族では比喩としてズレてしまうってことなのではないかと。
