This is a heavily interactive web application, and JavaScript is required. Simple HTML interfaces are possible, but that is not what this is.

The connection between them should also not be transparent as oftentimes you don't just want to call a function from the client to the server. You also want to cache it, throttle it, etc. because calling a "backend function" is a costly operation.
