Dav Pilkey’s books motivated my son to become an independent reader. 1st grade, when he was aware “everyone” had a higher reading level, he was ready to give up. Hated school. But wanted to read Pilkey’s books so, so much. Gave in to working with his tutor to learning structured literacy.
