Tangent but:
"Why did they redesign the VDP?"
My guess is it that it had to do with arcades where SMS VDP was used as an overlay for the MD VDP (since the redesign introduced V28/V30 for mode 4, which would allow it to fit neatly on top of a mode 5 viewport).
