The fascinating part of Douglas and Pope Countlies’ big lakes was that the lakes lie within “tunnel valleys” that hosted Superior Lobe ice, when the Des Moines lobe covered the area. Minnewaska, Carlos and Ida all parallel the subglacial meltwater valleys they exploited as stagnant ice.
