Sounds like the "Hieronymus effect" - where a physical measurement relies on the wishful impression of a person, rather than objectivity of equipment. I'm paraphrasing James Mahaffey, who starts his book "Atomic Adventures" (2017) with the story of Thomas Galen Hieronymus' Eloptic Energy quackery.
