Ugolino and his sons are figures in Dante's Inferno, specifically in canto XXXIII. They represent the suffering of Count Ugolino della Gherardesca, who was imprisoned with his sons and grandsons and starved to death. The sculptor Carpeaux shows Ugolino at the moment where he considers cannibalism.
