There actually has been some really interesting work relating the state of the wintertime stratosphere to preconditioning springtime sea ice (e.g., https://doi.org/10.1175/JCLI-D-17-0495.1 and https://doi.org/10.1175/JCLI-D-19-0064.1). I can try to find a more accessible summary of this research too. More to understand for sure!
